Target audience
Using the website IMDb I found that over half of the top 50 grossing films of 2012 were action/sci-fi films. This was useful when considering the target audience, knowing that a lot of people found this genre interesting. Further primary and secondary research was done to find out what a specific demographic would be for this kind of film, and what specifically they found interesting. From primary research I found that teenagers aged 16-19 like action/sci-fi films. Research show that teenager like fast paced films with lots of action because it seems more interesting for them to watch something that may not happen in real life. A male demographic prefer to see a lot of violence, fast cars and explosions. A female demographic also like these kinds of films when they have someone to identify with, for example more females like the films ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Tomb raider’ because the main character is female, however not as many girls said they liked ‘fight club’, a film where there are not many female character to identify with. Using this information I made sure the main character was female as this could be used to encourage a male and female demographic. Further target audience research indicate that this film would appeal more to a C2D demographic, as in ‘Total Recall’ and ‘The Hunger Games’ it’s the middle class population that are being victimised, the main character also comes from a middle class background, however some aspects of the film may appeal to a ABC1 demographic as some of the film represents the majority of the higher class population in a positive light, and its only a small number of the higher class population who are seen as the enemy.
Shooting script research
The ‘Fight Club’ shooting script gave me a good idea of how to construct one, including the right language to use. This have me the idea of using voice over, this was useful and helped me evolve my idea.. I also like the dark feel the ‘Fight Club’ portrays, although this film starts off a lot darker than mine it was still insightful to see how they used these conventions to portray this atmosphere. The ‘Momento’ shooting script also provided a lot of detail and some aspects were used when constructing mine as my film has some similar themes and ideologies to these films.
Opening scene research
The film ‘The Island’ is similar to mine in terms of plot and genre. It has a lot of action and mystery, this was shown through the opening scene. The shots where fast and created an enigma, there was also fast paced action with no real explanation, this would hopefully hook the audience into watching the rest of the film as they now have questions they want answered. I tried to crea
Introduction
For my pre-production I decided to construct a shooting script for the opening scene for a new film ‘State of Regression’. As part of my research I looked at a number of different texts similar to my idea including watching opening scenes, and reading shooting scripts of films with similar genre/plot lines. I looked up how to construct a shooting script, including the language involved. The shooting scripts for ‘Momento’ and ‘Fight Club’ were my main sources of information. I also watched a number of opening scenes from films such as ‘Total Recall’, ‘The Island’, ‘The Hunger Games’, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, and ‘Tomb Raider’. As each of these films have some similarities to my idea. I conducted further research and analysed a number of posters from films that were highlighted as the top grossing films of 2012 by IMDb.
